The creation of perfect gloves begins with the raw material: inspection and tanning

Restelli gloves are born from a careful and meticulous selection of raw materials. This is where our idea of luxury begins: in the choice of the finest leathers and in the respect for timing and artisanal gestures handed down through generations. Even before cutting, even before stitching, each hide undergoes a strict quality inspection—carried out entirely by hand.

At our headquarters on Corso Sempione, in Milan, we examine each leather using tools such as the dial thickness gauge: a simple-looking yet highly precise instrument that allows us to measure the leather’s thickness down to a tenth of a millimeter.

Why is this step so important? Because every glove model requires a different thickness: a perfect balance between softness, strength, and elasticity. And only through manual inspection can we ensure that each hide meets our standards. We don’t rely solely on sight or touch: every detail is measured, assessed, and approved.

Behind every hide lies a process that requires patience, care, and respect for the material. Our leathers come from carefully selected tanneries, specialized in processes that preserve the material’s original properties.

Tanning is a crucial step: it’s where, once approved, raw hide is transformed into a noble material, ready to last over time. We work with tanners who use methods that take weeks, but result in full, soft, velvety, vibrant leathers.

Each hide is different: it changes with the seasons, with the environment. That’s why every batch is evaluated individually, one by one. Just as we have done for over a hundred years. When we say that every Restelli glove is handmade, we’re not just referring to the stitching. Our manual work begins much earlier: with selection, inspection, and respect for the materials. Because only by choosing with care and being personally involved in every step of the production process can we guarantee the excellence our clients have sought and expected for generations. Inspecting, measuring, touching, comparing. And only when everything is perfect, can we begin to build.
